About the Artist

Jean Charlotte McLean is a fifth generation farmer, a mother, and an artist. When she was a young girl, she always said she would be a famous artist. Fate and circumstances took 28 years to bring her back to the canvas. In the winter of 1992, her family’s citrus business (along with the entire Florida citrus industry) collapsed due to pre-NAFTA trade agreements with Mexico.

Somewhere in the beginnings of a twelve year battle to save the family farm, create something wonderful with the land, and pay the million dollar farm debt, fate literally leaned a canvas against a tree in front of her. She dragged it home, picked up a paintbrush for the first time since she was a teenager, and thus began the odyssey. 84 paintings later, her pieces are in collections across the US.

Remarks

" They will study this art in the history books."  -Prudence Fairweather; Art Dealer, New York

" An amazing and interesting fact about Jean Charlotte McLean’s art is that her paintings are entirely freehanded, she does not use any drafting tools, templates or T-squares. Another interesting fact is that she "goes straight to the canvas" with no preconceived notion of what she is going to paint. Consequently, the paintings evolve in layers of beautiful imagery that are paintings unto themselves."  - Lisa Sheppard; Artist, Oregon

" Jeannie, you have to be experienced, you cannot be explained."  -Jim Naughton; President, Pointer Institute, Florida

" Through my paintings, I seek interpretation of my experiences. My intent is to bring a deeper understanding, a transcendent balance of line and color and image to bear on the canvas, a place of witness. A writer, filmmaker friend says that the easel is my altar and the canvas my confessional."
-Jean Charlotte McLean
